| Description | François-André-Adrien Pluquet (1716–1790) was a French theologian, historian, and apologist known for his intellectual defense of Christianity against the Enlightenment philosophes. Born in Bayeux, he eventually rose to become the chair of history at the Collège de France in 1776. Pluquet is best remembered for his Mémoires pour servir à l'histoire des égarements de l'esprit humain (1762), a critical dictionary of heresies that targeted the skepticism of figures like Voltaire and Rousseau. Despite his opposition to the Encyclopédistes, his work De la Sociabilité (1767) was influential for arguing that religious morality was the essential foundation of social order and political stability. |
