DescriptionPierre-Martial Cibot (1727–1780) was a French Jesuit missionary and scholar. He entered the Society of Jesus in the province of Aquitaine in 1743. After teaching humanities, he departed for China in 1758 at his own request, arriving in Beijing in June 1760. He served primarily at the imperial court for the next two decades, engaging in scientific and historical studies. Cibot contributed to the Mémoires concernant l'histoire, les sciences, les arts, les mœurs, les usages, etc. des Chinois, writing on topics ranging from Chinese botany and hydromechanics to comparative customs. He also maintained pastoral duties, overseeing congregations in Beijing. Cibot died in China in 1780.
