| Description | Juan Cobo (c. 1546–1592) was a Spanish Dominican missionary and pioneering sinologist. Arriving in Manila in 1588, he dedicated himself to evangelizing the Chinese community in the Parian. A gifted linguist, Cobo produced the Shi lu (Veritable Record), the first book in Chinese to introduce Western science and philosophy, and translated the Mingxin baojian into Spanish, marking the first European translation of a Chinese classic. He also co-authored the Chinese Doctrina Christiana (1593), one of the first books printed in the Philippines. In 1592, after a successful diplomatic mission to Japan, he tragically died in a shipwreck off Formosa. |
