Biography

Slovak historian, ethnographist, and a central figure of the Habsburg Enlightenment. Born into the minor nobility in the Kingdom of Hungary, he initially trained with the Jesuits before joining Imperial Library in Vienna (1748), rising to become its chief librarian and serving until his death. A prolific scholar, he leveraged the library's holdings to publish critical editions and studies, including works on Slavic history and Intorcetta’s Latin translation of Confucian texts (Sinarum Scientia Politico-Moralis). His legacy is the Ratio Educationis (1777), an official state treatise that systematically reformed the Habsburg educational system.
