DescriptionPhilippe Couplet (1623–1693) was a Flemish Jesuit missionary to China. Born in Mechelen, he entered the Society of Jesus and sailed for China in 1656. He conducted evangelical work for over two decades across several provinces, notably Jiangnan. Elected procurator of the vice-province in 1680, he travelled to Rome as a delegate to advocate for the mission. After a decade in Europe, he embarked for China again in 1692 but died en route near Goa.
